What's New Around Class!

Hello students and parents! We are almost through our third week of school! Time is flying by. I thought I would take a moment to update what has been going on around class. In writing we have been working on our narrative papers. We learned about three different types of narratives (biographical, person, and fictional). Students got to choose which they wanted to write. We have went through the step- by- step writing process. We began with prewrite, went to rough drafts, editing, and are currently working on make revisions. Ask your students what they have chosen to write about! This week marked the first week of having our specialists in the room during Power Hour. There are four different literacy based centers that the students rotate to. This provides a way for teachers to work with small groups and really focus on specific areas of improvement needed for each student. In math we are focusing on different properties of expressions. We have done, commutative, associative, and distributive. We will also be getting into algebraic expressions and solving for unknown numbers, also called variables. Science and social studies alternate, depending on the day of the week. In science we are studying phases of the moon. We learned that there are 8 different phases the moon experiences. The students should also be staying on top of observing the moon each night. We began the 5 Themes of Geography in social studies. We are going to be learning more about individual countries and continents of the world. Eventually, we will create our own country! This will be a fun and great way for students to explore everything that makes a country what it is! Please remember to have your student read at least 20 minutes each night. We generally have math homework each night, as well. Next week I will be sending home printouts of any homework I may be missing. If you have any questions or concerns for me, please feel free to contact me by email quinci.hambrick@canyonsdistrict.org. You may also contact me by means of calling the school office and having them page me.
Let's continue to have a great year!
Thanks!
Ms. Hambrick
